The Second International Workshop on Sea-Floor Observation
November 11-12, 2011, Shanghai
With its rapid development in economy, China is now placing more emphasis on marine science and technology. One of the major endeavors is to develop sea-floor observation. The First International Workshop on Seafloor Observation was held in Shanghai in May, 2008, with 58 participants from 6 countries. Since then some progress has been made, with a coastal observatory being constructed off the Yangtze estuary and the “Chinese cables observatory experiment” underway at the MARS test bed. Recently, large-scale projects have been proposed at the national level to develop the sea-floor observation system in China. However, the speed of development sharply contrasts with the poor knowledge and expertise in the field inside the country. To promote international exchanges and collaboration, the Second International Workshop on Sea-Floor Observation will be held in Shanghai, China, in November 11-12, 2011. The workshop will review recent progress of seafloor observatory science and technology worldwide, with a focus on its scientific applications. The invited participants are expected to share their experience and give advice how China should develop its seafloor observation system.
