于际民教授2006年获得剑桥大学古海洋学博士学位,现为澳洲国立大学地球科学系副教授。于际民教授长期从事古海洋学和全球碳循环研究,研究专长包括同位素及元素地球化学,古海洋/古气候,第四纪气候变化,全球碳循环与大气CO2变化,古环境指标开发及测试等。其研究成果发表在Science、Nature Geoscience、Nature Communications、EPSL、GCA、QSR、Paleoceanography等国际主流学术期刊上。

Atmospheric CO2 plays a critical role in the climate system, and we must have a sound understanding of carbon cycle to faithfully predict future climate in face of ongoing anthropogenic atmospheric CO2. Lessons from past atmospheric CO2 changes, especially those occurred on millennial and centennial timescales, would be valuable to enhance our prediction capabilities. Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain past atmospheric CO2 changes, but they are yet unable to fully explain different types of CO2 rises during the last deglacial, highlighting knowledge gaps in our understanding of carbon cycle. Here, we use a new approach and exceptionally high resolution marine records to carry out a detailed investigation into processes controlling atmospheric CO2 surrounding Younger dryas, a critical time period when both millennial and centennial timescales CO2 rises occurred. We find that ocean circulation, via affecting carbon sequestration efficiencies and volume occupations in the ocean interior of major water masses, critically shaped the atmospheric CO2 evolution around Younger Dryas.
