A large proportion of the sediment generated by erosion of the continents is ultimately delivered to the deep ocean to form submarine fans, being carried to the margins of these fans by turbidity currents that flow through submarine channels that may be hundreds or even thousands of kilometers long. The persistence of these flows over extremely long distances with gradients that may be 10-4 or less, while maintaining sediment as coarse as fine-grained sand in suspension, is enigmatic, given the drag that one would expect to be experienced by such flows, and the effects of progressive dilution by entrainment of ambient seawater.
