2013 Annual Academic Conference Successfully Held

The 2013 Annual Academic Conference was successfully held in Lin Gang area, Pudong New District from Dec. 21^st to 22^nd by School of Ocean and Earth Science and State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology, with 87 participants including faculty members, postdocs and some adjunct professors and chair professors. The conference aims at activating academic communication and encouraging interdisciplinary researches within the School and the Laboratory.

Classified into several categories of paleoceanography and paleoenvironment, marine sedimentology, marine biogeochemistry, marine geophysics and tectonics, oil gas exploration technology, seafloor observation technology and gemology, the presentation section of this conference were made up of 32 oral presentations and 27 poster presentations. Researchers, engineers, technicians and postdocs introduced their annual research and work progresses, demonstrating a very good interdisciplinary cooperation. Poster presentation also included new discoveries in researches of integrated geophysics, testing and analytical methods, microbial mineralization, etc.

Academician Wang Pinxian pointed out in his summary that this conference has achieved its goal of promoting internal communication within the School. Different research groups shall continue to focus their strength and efforts on the two main research areas (for Geodynamics, macro evolution in the west Pacific, and for Paleoenvironment, tropical forcing of climatic Evolution), and by taking advantage of the research facilities and good academic environment of the School and the Laboratory, multidisciplinary collaborative research teams with Tongji characteristics shall be formed to conquer world scientific challenges. Prof. Wang also encouraged participants at present to seize the important opportunity that the country has determined to strengthen its marine force and be a world “marine giant” to should more responsibilities in major research projects.         

In the afternoon of Dec. 22^nd, a summary conference and award ceremony was also held, in which Prof. Yang Qunhui introduced the new undergraduate major of marine resource developmental technology to be launched in 2014, Prof. Yang Shouye outlined annual work of the State Key Laboratory, Prof. Jian Zhimin introduced the overall development and construction of ocean sciences of Tongji, and Prof. Geng Jianhua presented an annual working report of the School. A small conference concerning macro evolution in the west Pacific was also held in the noon of the 21^st with Prof. Geng Jianhua and Prof. Lin Jian as convenors, and a symposium held for talent introduction and cultivation in the evening that night.

During the two-day annual conference, participants were also invited for a visit to the Research Center for Marine Science and Technology of Tongji University (also known as LinGang Research Base of the State Key Laboratory) which is still under construction. Director of the center Prof. Xu Huiping introduced the current progress and preliminary planning of the center, which is expected to bring more opportunities for future development of marine sciences of Tongji.
