Prof. Hans Christian Larsen from IODP-MI Working with the Laboratory
Former vice president of IODP-MI(Management International, International Ocean Discovery Program) and world-renowned marine geologist and geophysicist Prof. Hans Christian Larsen was invited to work with the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology from September 14th to 30th, 2013. During this visit, Prof. Larsen worked with Chinese scientists on a new IODP proposal in the South China Sea, which was discussed in a symposium held in South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Guangzhou, China) concerning its scientific goals and suggested drilling sites. The symposium, sponsored by IODP-China office (based in Tongji University) and chaired by Prof. Larsen, was attended by about 20 scientists from home and abroad. Currently, the new proposal has been submitted to IODP committee, and will positively play the role of realizing the third ocean drilling cruise in the South China Sea.
As former vice president of IODP-MI, Dr. Larsen has been an active coordinator in the international ocean drilling programs and has very rich management experience. Since the year 2013, Prof. Larsen has been a guest professor of Tongji University from the National High-end Foreign Experts Program, and will work with the Laboratory every year for two months. He will continue to support the implementation of the coming second ocean drilling in the SCS led by Chinese scientists, and help further promote IODP’s development in the country.
