 Vice Mayor of Shanghai Visited the School

On May 16th, vice mayor of Shanghai WENG Tiehui made a special inspection tour to the School of Ocean and Earth Science. During the tour which was joined in by Party Committee Secretary of Tongji Mr. ZHOU Zuyi and Vice President Mr. JIANG Changjun, Ms. Weng and her delegation examined the development of Tongji’s ocean sciences from school dean Prof. JIAN Zhimin.   

The tour members attentively learnt about achievements our school has made in the promotion of the country’s deep sea research works: the fruitful results of the South China Sea Deep Program, which is a key research program of National Science Foundation of China(NSFC) and whose office was set in Tongji with a total budget of 150 million yuan; recent works of Integrated Ocean Drilling Program of China(IODP-China) and the first Chinese ocean drilling vessel which is under preparation; the current progress of the construction of Long-Term Seafloor Scientific Observatory System which is a national key science and technology infrastructure construction project. When visiting the Program Control Room and Equipment R&D Center for East China Sea Xiaoqushan Seafloor Observatory, the first of its kind in the country which was established by the school in 2009, Ms. Weng and the delegation expressed their appreciations to the efforts and achievements the school has made in deep sea observatory and scientific researches. They later visited the school’s popular science education center Undersea.

Ms. Weng said that ocean sciences of Tongji has very distinguished features and advantages, and the Shanghai municipal government would continue to give full support to its development so as to provide better intellectual supports to the city construction. She also urged the school to focus on personnel management mechanism innovation under the guidance of the Innovative Capacity Upgrading Scheme, or the 2011 Scheme, and to make continuous efforts in promoting internationalization of ocean sciences.
