The School’s Seventh Joint Committee Meeting Held

On May 14th,2013, the School of Ocean and Earth Science held its seventh Joint Committee  Meeting, which was hosted by dean of the school Prof. Zhimin Jian. Prof. Jianhua Geng and other five committee members, as well as Ms. Dongxia Zhu, director of the school office and Shunsheng Qin, director of SKL office also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the school’s major issues were introduced and discussed. The current progress of the country’s key scientific project: Long-Term Seafloor Observatory System was first reported, and the recent establishment of Collaborative Innovation Center for the Scientific Project on Seafloor Observatory was introduced. This Innovation Center, set up under the national Innovative Capacity Upgrading Scheme, or the 2011 Scheme, was jointly organized by Tongji Univ., Xiamen Univ., Zhejiang Univ. as well as Shanghai Jiaotong Univ. It will not only promote disciplinary optimization of Tongji’s ocean sciences, but also help upgrading China’s innovative capability and international competitiveness.

Also, according to the results of 2012 Discipline Assessment issued by Chinese Ministry of Education, the school was ranked third in Ocean Science and fifth in Earth Physics nationwide. Facing the current situation of our disciplinary development where challenges and opportunities are both existing, the committee members suggested that the school should strengthen its efforts in talents especially in young talents cultivation, focus on developing students’ overall capacities, and broaden its international cooperation. Relevant works were also briefed during the meeting including: recent recruitment of high-end talents, administrative staffs and technicians; preparatory work for its further cooperation with U.S.Texas A&M, Italy Napoli Federico II University and University of Malaya.

Other administrative rules and regulations were also formed through discussion and were to released, including Management and Implementation Measures for Post-Doctoral Mobile Station, and Rules and Regulations for Field Work. The committee members also discussed Standards for Administrative Part-Time Work Allowances, which would later be passed on to all school faculty members for suggestions and further refinement.
