The School: 2012 Annual Summary Conference and Award Ceremony Held

On Dec. 23rd 2012, the School of Ocean and Earth Science successfully held its Annual Summary Conference and Award Ceremony, which was attended by about 80 faculty members as well as some adjunct professors and chair professors of the School.

Party chief of the School Prof. Jianhua Geng first gave an overview of the school’s works in this year concerning teaching and talent cultivation, organizational and administrative management innovation, team-building, as well as our current achievements in marine popular science advocacy. He also pointed out the problems existed, emphasizing that the School leadership would make continuous efforts for the construction of a system-operated and democratic service and management mechanism, and enhance international cooperation for teaching and talent exchange.

Director of the State Key Laboratory Prof. Zhifei Liu presented an annual summary report of Laboratory’s works concerning management reforms, platform and discipline construction, research progresses and achievements, as well as domestic and international cooperation, and led a discussion on future development of Tongji’s ocean sciences: A new era has come when the country has pledged to be a “marine giant”, and as the “national team” of earth sciences, how do we transform our developmental model from “raw material output” to “deep manufacturing” , upgrade our research level from “outstanding” to “leading” nationwide, and hold the top position in the world.  

Dean of the School Prof. Zhimin Jian assigned the ten key tasks for the School in the coming 2013 targeting on the construction of ocean sciences, with analysis of the current situation in which challenges come with opportunities.    

The results of 2012 assessment for faculties of the School were released in the conference. Eight teachers were evaluated “excellent” and rewarded RMB 20,000 per person, and fourteen teachers were honored “Dean’s Prize” and rewarded RMB 10,000 per person. For those who passed the assessment, they were rewarded RMB 5,000 apiece. Prof. Jianhua Geng and Prof. Zhimin Jian also presented certificates to these prize winners.

The 2012 assessment work, launched by the School at the beginning of December, was carried out by respective assessment committees according to different types of positions. The plenary for the appraisal was successfully conducted on Dec. 18th, and the "Appeal Committee" was also set for faculties to seek solutions and express opinions on issues that they were concerned about. With supports from an open and fair evaluation procedure, this assessment benefited mutual understanding among its faculty members on working progresses within the school.

Since the new leadership took office this June, ardent promotions were vigorously advanced for system construction and management innovation. A decision-making mechanism, the “Joint Committee” was implemented to gather wisdom from the public so as to help make scientific and sustainable decisions. In addition, a series of management rules and regulations were released that have effectively motivated earnest devotions to the development of ocean sciences of Tongji.
